UK unemployment has fallen but

It has been announced this week that UK unemployment has fallen; but across Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset, dole queues have actually increased slightly.

Unemployment had unexpectedly dropped by 37,000 people across the UK as a whole. Unemployment now stands at 2.49 million which is 185,000 people less than a year earlier.

Across the three counties City Centre recruitment operates; Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset, claimant numbers as a whole rose. Numbers have been rising since August 2012 however have dropped significantly since January 2012.

This fall in unemployment is expected to be short lived with a return to increasing unemployment due in the near future. Increases are to be fueled by the overall reduction in public sector employment with the Army announcing earlier this week that 5300 of currently serving personnel will be made redundant later this year. This is on top of some high profile high street chains ceasing trading or going into administration including; Jessops, HMV, Comet and Blockbusters.

Today Flybe, based out of Exeter Airport, has announced a 10% reduction in its workforce which is likely to hit their workforce at Southampton airport.

Further data is being released on Friday for GDP for Q4 2012. This data is widely expected to show a return to negative growth for the UK in this quarter as the economy suffers from a post Olympics hangover. This data could spell the first quarter of negative growth out of two which would indicate the triple dip recession.

Despite all this negative news there is some good news. City Centre recruitment is busy! Our business specialises in the Engineering, Industrial, Driving and Hospitality Sectors. Over all four of our sectors we are experiencing increased demand when compared to January 2012.
