Jobs increasing in Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset

Triple Dip Recession?

Is the UK now facing the dreaded triple dip recession as it is reported GDP in Q4 2012 falls by 0.3%?

A recession is declared when an economy sustains two back to back quarters of negative growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). So far the UK has experienced this twice resulting in two periods of recession over the past 5 years.

From Q2 2008 until Q3 2009 the UK experienced 5 consecutive quarters of GDP contraction totaling 6.5%.  Then again from Q4 2011 until Q3 2012 the economy shrank by a total of 0.9% over three consecutive quarters.

It is widely believed we would have stayed in recession throughout 2012 were it not for the Olympics. The Olympics in London and Weymouth created a number of temporary games related jobs and demand in the UK which saw GDP rise by 1% following the previous quarter which saw a 0.4% fall.  However, as was reported on Friday, GDP slipped back again by 0.3% in Q4 2012.

The counties of Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset in which City Centre recruitment operate, appear to be following a slightly different economic trajectory with business moving along at a reasonable rate in all of the sectors in which we provide jobs : Engineering, industrial and warehouse, catering and hospitality, driving and cleaning.

Dan Shirmpton, Managing Director of City Centre recruitment based in Yeovil, Weymouth, Bournemouth and Southampton posted a question on Buy Dorset’s Linkedin Group discussing the triple dip recession and how it was affecting Dorset residents and the overall consensus was of  optimism.
