Spotlight on Driving Jobs in Southampton and Bournemouth is the latest in City Centre Recruitment’s Spotlight series of blog articles.

Firstly we need to look at the types of Driving Licences there are. The following list is not comprehensive and only includes the main categories we provide driving jobs in Southampton and Bournemouth for:

Goods Vehicle Driving Licence Categories

Holders of old Class 2 and 3 licences may have grandfather rights to drive C+E, restricted to drawbar outfits; check driver’s licence for details

GTW – Gross Train Weight (i.e. vehicle and trailer combination)

MPW – Maximum Permitted Weight


B Class
– A vehicle not over 3.5 tonnes MPW with not more than eight seats (plus the driver). Plus: a trailer where the trailer’s MPW does not exceed 750kg or the GTW of vehicle and the trailer is not over 3.5 tonnes

B+E – Category B vehicle with trailer up to 750kg or GTW of over 3.5 tonnes

C1 – Vehicle over 3.5 tonnes but below 7.5 tonnes MPW. May draw a trailer of up to 750kg

(‘Car’ licences issued before January 1997 have automatic rights to drive up to 7.5 tonnes. Licences issued after then do not allow holders to drive vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5

tonnes, which require a C1 test)

C1+E – Combinations where the prime mover is greater than 3.5 tonnes but less than 7.5 tonnes MPW and the trailer exceeds750kg, but not the tractor’s unladen weight, and the combination is below 12 tonnes GTW. (For licences issued prior to 1997, category is restricted to 8.25 tonnes GTW)

C – Any vehicle exceeding 3.5 tonnes MPW, otherthan those in categories DFGH, including a trailer not over 750kg (i.e. all rigid LGVs – the old HGV Class 2 and 3 licences)

C+E – Combinations where the prime over is in category C, but the combination is not in that category (equivalent to old HGV Class 1; covers all articulated and drawbar trailer combinations)

PCV (PSV) – Passenger Carrying Vehicle. Driver a bus with more than 9 seats for hire and reward including minibuses.

ADR – Whilst not a licence there are a number of driver jobs require an ADR certificate to carry dangerous goods. There are 9 main categories of certificate

Class 1 EXPLOSIVES
Class 2 GASES
Class 3 FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS
Class 4.1 FLAMMABLE SOLIDS
Class 4.2 SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTIBLE
Class 4.3 DANGEROUS WHEN WET
Class 5.1 OXIDISING AGENTS
Class 5.2 ORGANIC PEROXIDES
Class 6.1 TOXIC OR HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
Class 6.2 INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES
Class 7 RADIOACTIVES
Class 8 CORROSIVES
Class 9 MISCELLANEOUS

Candidates with one or more of the above licences have a vast array of different driving jobs they can undertake including the following:

Driver Jobs in Southampton and Bournemouth

3.5 Tonne Driver Jobs – Require a B Class licence. This type of job is more commonly known as a van driver job or delivery driver job. Main duties are varied but can include loading and unloading as well as driving. Van Driver Jobs are generally available to anyone with a normal car driving licence.

Multi Drop Driver Jobs – Require a B Class icence and are very similar to van driver jobs but require an amount of expereince of multi Drop work. Generally these jobs will be working for one of the national parcel delivery companies and dropping between 50 – 75 parcels per day in an area. Candidates must have good local area knowledge to achieve the required drop rates.

7.5 Tonne Driver Jobs – Require a C1 licence for larger bulk deliveries. Will do less drops than multi drop jobs but will involve larger consaingments.

Class 1 Driver Jobs – Require a C+E licence. This type of job involves the driving of large HGV vehicles including articulated vehicles and can involve long trunking runs in the UK or abroad.

Class 2 Driver Jobs – require a C licence. Very similar to Class 1 jobs but does not involve driving articulated lorries.

PSV Driver Jobs – More commonly known as Bus Driving Jobs. Must have a PSV licence allowing canddiates to driver buses with more than 16 seats.

HIAB Driver Jobs – involve Class 1 or 2 vehicles with integrated cranes on the back. These jobs require relevant licences and HIAB certificates.

Moffatt Driver Jobs – Involve Class 1 or 2 vehicles with Moffatt fork lift trucks being carried on the back. Require relevant licence and a Mounty Moffatt certificate.

ADR Driver Jobs – Can also be known as tanker driver jobs involve the transportation of dangerous goods. These jobs require the relevant licence and ADR certificate to the vehicle and load  you will be carrying.

Land Train Driver Jobs – Require a PSV licence. Involve the driving of the land train also known as the Noddy Train on the Weymouth and Bournemouth seafronts.

Refuse Driver Jobs – Require a C licence. Driving Refuse or dust carts on rounds. May be required to load as well.

Driving Jobs in Southampton generally focus around the docks with lots of Class 1 and 2 jobs available trunking goods from the ports to other parts of the UK. In addition there are lots of Multi Drop Jobs in Southampton available delivering parcels to Southampton and the surrounding areas.

Driving Jobs in Bournemouth generally focus on Multi Drop Jobs. Bournemouth acts as a hub for the main parcel delivery companies delivering parcels to Bournemouth, Poole, Dorchester and the rest of Dorset.
