Spotlight on Cultural Fit

Spotlight on Cultural Fit is the latest in City Centre Recruitment’s spotlight on series of blog articles.

The best way to start to explain what Cultural Fit is is to give an example:

Jimi Hendrix is considered by Rolling Stone magazine as the greatest guitarist of all time.

The Beatles are considered by rolling Stones magazine as the greatest Group of all time.

Basic logic would dictate that pairing the greatest group in the world with the greatest guitarist would produce a band from heven.

Whilst their music is similar with both Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles playing some of same songs during their careers, but in their own style, hindsight tells us that they would be unlikely to gel as a super group.

How does this relate to the placement of staff into temporary jobs you may ask?

In a nutshell it is not enough for an agency just to match skills with requirements. It is also necessary to match a number of other variable and less tangible assets which make up the culture of an organisation.

The culture of an organisation generally manifests itself in it’s:

  • language,
  • decision making,
  • symbols,
  • stories and legends
  • daily work practices.

How does this affect our service?

Initially City Centre will visit all new customers to learn of their needs. They will also be asked questions to establish the culture of the business in line with the 5 points above.

On the receipt of a requirement suitable candidates based on skills, availability etc will be sourced.

Candidates will then be face to face interviewed. along with the standard questions relating to work history, availability, the ability to get to work etc, questions regarding the type of person the candidate is will be asked to build up a picture as to whether the candidate will fit in with the over culture of the client.

This method of recruitment is clearly more labour intensive from our point of view however we believe the extra effort we put in at the beginning will mean a far higher success rate when placing staff into temp jobs.

We believe this in depth understanding of recruitment has resulted in City Centre Recruitment trading with over 3 new customers per week for the past 2 years which in turn has tripled our turnover within 3 years.
