Jobs in Dorset and Somerset created

Jobs in Dorset and Somerset have been created at a far higher rate than Job losses resulting in a net reduction in unemployment in the South West by 10,000 in the three months to December, official figures have revealed.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) published their latest results on people looking for work between October and December 2013. The overall unemployment rate in the South West dropped from 6.2% to 6.0% for this period when compared to the previous quarter.

Just under 2.52million people are now in jobs in the South West which includes Dorset and Somerset. The main sectors which provide jobs in Dorset and Somerset are the Manufacturing, Engineering, Agricultural and Tourism (including hotels) Sectors for which City Centre recruitment provide work to hundreds of people.

Overall jobs in the UK increased, which resulted in a drop in unemployment to 7.8% which was a 0.1% drop on the previous quarter.

When compared against the UK as a whole, the South West appears to be powering ahead with a 0.2% drop in unemployment or 50% improvement on the overall national picture.

Employment Minister Mark Hoban welcomed the figures, saying employment had increased for 15 months. The UK employment rate is growing at almost double the rate of the US, and faster than any other G7 country, he said.

“These are very positive figures showing employment rising for 15 months and despite difficult economic circumstances, unemployment is lower than when this Government took office.

“It’s good to see long-term unemployment falling and the number of young people claiming jobseeker’s allowance dropping again, while the increase in vacancies shows there are jobs out there. But we are not complacent, and will continue making sure we give jobseekers the support and training they need to achieve their goal of returning to work.”

City Centre recruitment based in Yeovil, Weymouth, Bournemouth and Southampton has seen a steady increase in demand for job seekers from all its specialist divisions; industrial, engineering, catering, driving and cleaning.

Simon Thomas, Director of City Centre recruitment commented on the figures “the south west really seems to be leading the way. Jobs in our engineering division especially in Bournemouth, Poole and Ferndown are coming in thick and fast. We are seeing people relocate from all over the UK to take advantage of the local economy and also the beauty of the south coast.”
