Jobs in South West Increase

Jobs in South West increase as unemployment across the UK drops by 57,000.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has just released the UK’s latest unemployment figures which shows nationally that unemployment has fallen by 57,000 claimants to 2.51million in the 3 months to May 2013.

Within these statistics were the facts that youth unemployment has fallen by 20,000. However long term unemployment numbers are at a 17 year high at 915,000. Long term unemployment is defined as people who have been out of work for more than a year.

The long term unemployment statistic demonstrates the difficulties people are having finding work once they have been out of work for a year or more. Employees able to be picky with candidates with a good work track record being a major factor in the selection process. It is therefore imperative for candidates seeking work to try to stay in work. The best way to do this is via temp jobs which can be flexible around the job search.

Of the 915,000 people classed as long term unemployed, 460,000 have not had a job for over two years.

The South West of England as a region, has fared somewhat better than the rest of the UK as a whole with unemployment dropping by 11,000 in the latest release. This reduced the overall unemployment rate for the South West to 5.8% which is lowest in the UK.

City Centre Recruitment with offices in Southampton, Bournemouth, Weymouth and Yeovil has experienced this dropping in unemployment as the tide shifts from there being lots of candidates available to a scarcity.

Dan Shrimpton, Managing Director of City Centre Recruitment commented “over the past 2 years the market has changed in Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset. It used to be that there were lots of people looking for jobs, now the jobs are very much hunting them. In particular we are desperately looking for skilled and semi skilled engineers for jobs in Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset. I believe we are seeing a culmination of factors effecting the economy in a positive way including the weather, recent sporting success and a general economic recovery. Long may it continue”
